Nicola Cairncrossentrepreneur, adviser, author
Nicola Cairncross has spent more than 28 years building, buying, transforming and advising founder-led businesses. Her particular strength is spotting the assets, opportunities and revenue streams already sitting inside a business, then turning them into clearer propositions, new products, new audiences and repeatable systems. She works with quiet experts and extraordinary entrepreneurs.
Nicola Cairncross
Sometimes you don’t need another marketing tactic. You need someone who can look at the whole business and spot what you’re not seeing.
I
Three strands, one idea
A café in Mayfair, a hotel in Worthing, an advisory programme, a digital agency. The settings changed; the work underneath stayed the same: finding the value a business already has, and putting it to work.
Advising founders
Today, through NicolaCairnX, she works directly with experienced founders on growth strategy, positioning, monetisation and commercial decisions. She has turned her own methods into 15 AI-enabled interactive business Playbooks spanning Direction, Market, Message, Money and Systems.
Building businesses
She founded The Money Gym, bought and transformed a boutique hotel, co-founded ROARlocal with Neil Asher, and founded and scaled Clicks & Leads, leading a distributed team of 5–6 specialists across the UK, Portugal and the Philippines.
Books, speaking, media
Author of 12 books and more than 500 podcast episodes. She has spoken to live audiences of 1,000+, keynoted for CIMA and the International Coach Federation, and was shortlisted for ‘Dragons’ Den’ Series 1.

Early years
Nicola studied fashion design at West Sussex College of Design from 1981 to 1983. At school, she says, she “learned to type, now THAT was useful!”
In London she worked as PA to the CEO and directors at Price Jameson Group (1994–1996), then as a recruitment consultant at Success Appointments (1996–1998).
In 1998 she applied for a PA role with the serial entrepreneur Bennie Gray. After interviewing her, he created a Special Projects role instead, to use her wider commercial and creative skills across his portfolio. She created and launched a vintage café inside Grays Antiques in Mayfair, overseeing the build, equipment, recruitment, menu and launch, and later launched and ran The Music Room, a 3,500 sq ft venue for fashion shows, press launches and designer sales.
III
The Money Gym, and a hotel
‘The Money Gym’, 1999–2010
She created a structured 10-step financial and business advisory method, later written up as the book ‘The Money Gym’. When she formally launched the programme in 2003, one email brought in more than 25 clients paying £300 a month on the first day.
It grew to around £250,000 a year, serving 60–80 clients across three service levels through five Money Gym Coaches: graduates of the programme whom she mentored and supervised. There were residential strategy weekends and three sold-out events for audiences of 120+.
The Acacia Hotel, Worthing, 2003–2006
She bought a £500,000 twelve-bedroom property with £350,000 of bank finance plus vendor financing, and turned it from staff accommodation into a boutique hotel within 12 weeks.
An old guest book found in the building became its first digital customer database. The first summer filled quickly, and the quieter winters hosted Money Gym residentials. After three years she sold it, having concluded that a twelve-bedroom model lacked the scale for good long-term economics.

Why it matters now
Nicola’s work keeps coming back to one question: what is a business already sitting on that it isn’t using? In her words: “an audience that isn’t being monetised, expertise that could become a product, content that could become an acquisition system, or a business model that needs rethinking.”
What has changed is the tools. She has put her own thinking into 15 interactive Playbooks and a companion app for ‘A Better Entrepreneur’, and she runs The Digital Entrepreneurs Circle for experts, business owners and founders.
“I’ve stopped being my own bottleneck, it’s like a marketing team that never sleeps and never sulks. I’m getting more done before lunch than I used to manage in a week. A better entrepreneur works smarter, not longer. This is how I do it.”
I’m particularly interested in how AI can make good business thinking more useful and accessible without losing creativity or human connection.
